How we source eye-test fee figures
Each provider's data on this site is taken from that provider's own published source. This page describes the source per provider, the refresh discipline, and what we do not publish.
Sources, by provider
- NHS published guidance. NHS England eye-test eligibility published at nhs.uk/help-with-health-costs/free-nhs-eye-tests-and-optical-vouchers, NHS Wales published guidance, NHS Scotland universal-coverage published guidance, and HSC Northern Ireland eye-test eligibility.
- Specsavers published fees. Specsavers UK published fee schedule for paying customers (currently around £25 for a standard eye test where not NHS-funded). Specsavers OCT and contact-lens-fitting fees taken from their published schedule.
- Boots Opticians, Vision Express, Asda Opticians published fees. Boots Opticians published consumer eye-test fee, Vision Express published fee, Asda Opticians published fee, and the major regional chains where pricing is publicly disclosed.
- Private practice and specialist published fees. Independent practitioner College of Optometrists guidance on typical private fees, Specialeyes / Leightons / D&A published fees where openly disclosed, and Moorfields Private / private-clinic published consultation fees for specialist eye-care.
What we deliberately do not publish
- Specific local-optometrist quote pricing. Local independent practices set their own rates. We publish College of Optometrists guidance bands, not named-practice specific quotes.
- Frame-and-lens upsell pricing. This site is about the eye-test fee itself; it does not maintain a per-chain frame-pricing reference.
- Personal patient data. Calculators run entirely in your browser. Your eligibility-questionnaire inputs are not transmitted, logged, or stored.
Update cadence
Site values update only when the underlying reality changes. Triggers:
- NHS announces an eligibility-rule or eye-test-fee change
- Major chain announces a published fee change
- Material movement in average independent-optometrist published rates
- Substantive change in optical-voucher value or scope
Cosmetic date bumps are not made.
Editorial position
This site is operated by Digital Signet, an independent AI-development studio. Digital Signet does not sell eye tests, does not act as an optician-finder, does not run an optometry practice, and does not accept paid placements from Specsavers, Boots, Vision Express, Asda or any other UK optician chain. See /about for the operator and the wider network.
Editorial direction is set by Oliver Wakefield-Smith. Drafts are produced via Digital Signet's autonomous AI development methodology and reviewed against the editorial framework before publication.
